Introduction to the Seafood Review 2023

Muka Tangata is pleased to announce the launch of the Seafood qualifications review. This will be a review of the Seafood Processing, Commercial Fishing, and Aquaculture qualifications.
Having a fit for purpose, flexible, and future-proof suite of qualifications for the Seafood industry will ensure ākonga (learners) are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and attributes to succeed. This will be a review of the Seafood Processing, Commercial Fishing, and Aquaculture qualifications.

Muka Tangata will be leading the consultation, design, and development of Seafood educational components (qualifications, standards, and micro-credentials). We will work alongside iwi and hapū Māori, industry partners, and providers across our regions to obtain a broad view. We will conduct an in-depth analysis of the Seafood industry, clarify the needs of vocational education and training (VET) partners, identify potential gaps in the existing educational components, and establish parameters for change. The review will take consideration of all appropriate documentation (e.g., the Fisheries Industry Transformation Plan) to ensure that any additions or changes to the qualifications, standards or micro-credentials are fit for the future and align with the vision of the Seafood industry of Aotearoa.
To improve outcomes for ākonga (including iwi and Māori, Pacific peoples, and tāngata whaikaha (people with disabilities), VET partners and industry, the review team will apply the following considerations:
- strengthening of numeracy and literacy support for ākonga,
- evaluation and inclusion of emerging technologies,
- review sustainable practices,
- incorporation of mātauranga Māori and te ao Māori,
- identification of transferrable (common core) skills; and,
- removal of barriers to completion.
The review will also include:
- development of skills standards,
- analysis of qualifications and associated skills standards and micro-credentials at the same time; and,
- consideration of flexible delivery models and programme guidance.
We are committed to leading the qualification review in a way that is empowering for all including iwi Māori, providers and ākonga.
